On Farm Food Safety
Many food containers release traces amounts of contaminants into foods. While many of these substances are not harmful, or have not been positively identified as posing a health risk, consumers should be aware of the various materials that can seep into food, and make informed decisions in purchasing and using food preparation and serving items.
BPA in Plastic Food Containers
Some plastic dishes and containers contain bisphenol A to increase the strength and clarity of the plastic. Bisphenol A is a polymer that can mimic estrogen in the human body. Bisphenol A is linked to developmental problems in the neurological and hormonal systems of infants and children. It may also be linked to disorders in adults such as heart attacks, diabetes, mood disorders, some cancers, abnormal sperm counts and ovarian cysts.
While there is no conclusive proof that the BPA in plastic storage containers and dishes is dangerous, the FDA recently determined that further investigation into the safety of BPA is needed. Plastics containing BPA are marked with recycling number seven, although that number is used for plastics that do not contain BPA as well.
